Lift and slide doors
Lift and slide doors are large sliding doors whose panels lift onto rollers to move and drop onto the sill to seal. They carry heavier glass and seal tighter than ordinary sliding patio doors.
2 lines we track come in lift and slide doors, in 2 frame materials: aluminum-clad wood (1), all-wood (1).
By frame material
Every lift and slide door line we track
| FrameThe frame material. Aluminum-clad wood has a timber frame with an aluminum skin outside; all-wood shows timber on both faces. | OperationHow the window opens: casement, awning, hung, sliding, tilt-turn or fixed. The symbols show the hinge side or travel direction. | ImpactTested to withstand wind-borne debris (ASTM E1886/E1996). Required in hurricane debris regions unless shutters are used. | GlazingThe number of glass panes in the sealed unit: double, triple or quad. More panes insulate better and weigh more. | InstallHow the unit attaches to the opening: nail fin, flush fin, block frame or replacement insert. | Verified | ||||||||

What to check before you specify lift and slide doors
- Panel weight and structure
- Large panels are heavy. The header above a wide opening has to limit deflection so the panels keep sliding freely; have the engineer size it with the door's weight and span.
- Sill and water
- Low and recessed sills look clean but need a drained, sloped sub-sill and some cover from weather. On exposed elevations, use the sill the maker rates for that exposure.
- Layout
- Layouts are written as seen from outside: X is a sliding panel and O is fixed. OX and XO are two-panel doors, OXXO opens in the middle, and pocketing layouts slide into the wall.
- Screens
- Ask whether a sliding or retractable screen is available for the layout, and whether it is in the quote.
- Ratings
- Doors are rated like windows. Check the performance class and design pressure for your actual panel size, not only the largest or smallest tested unit.
Common questions
- How does a lift and slide door work?
- Turning the handle lifts the panel onto rollers so it slides with little effort. Turning it back lowers the panel onto its seals, which compress to make the door weathertight and lock it in place.
- Lift and slide vs regular sliding door: what's the difference?
- An ordinary slider rides on its rollers all the time, with brush seals that let it move. A lift and slide sits down on compression seals when closed, so it seals tighter and can carry much heavier panels and glass, at a higher price.
- Can a lift and slide door have a flush threshold?
- Many lines offer a low or recessed sill that sits nearly flush with the floor. It needs a drained sub-sill and a sheltered location to keep water out, so check the maker's rating for exposed walls.
- What do OX, XO and OXXO mean?
- They describe the panels as seen from outside: X slides and O is fixed. OX has a fixed left panel and a sliding right panel, XO the reverse, and OXXO has two sliding panels meeting in the middle between two fixed ones.
- How much does a lift and slide door cost?
- More than an ordinary sliding patio door of the same size, because of the hardware, frame and heavier glass. Price depends mostly on panel size, glass and finish; ask for a quote on your opening.
