Tilt and turn windows
Tilt-turn windows are European-style sashes that tilt in for ventilation or swing in fully. They are the standard in Passive House work and give multi-point locking and very low air leakage.
3 lines we track come in tilt-turn windows, in 2 frame materials: all-wood (1), aluminum-clad wood (2).
By frame material
Every tilt-turn window line we track
| FrameThe frame material. Aluminum-clad wood has a timber frame with an aluminum skin outside; all-wood shows timber on both faces. | OperationHow the window opens: casement, awning, hung, sliding, tilt-turn or fixed. The symbols show the hinge side or travel direction. | ImpactTested to withstand wind-borne debris (ASTM E1886/E1996). Required in hurricane debris regions unless shutters are used. | GlazingThe number of glass panes in the sealed unit: double, triple or quad. More panes insulate better and weigh more. | InstallHow the unit attaches to the opening: nail fin, flush fin, block frame or replacement insert. | Verified | ||||||||

What to check before you specify tilt-turn windows
- Interior clearance
- The sash swings into the room. Check that furniture, deep sills, radiators and window coverings clear the full swing, especially on large sashes beside walkways.
- Installation type
- Most tilt-turn lines are block frames with no nailing fin. They are fixed with straps or screws and sealed with tapes and membranes, so the installer needs to know that method and the sill detail before the rough openings are framed.
- Hardware and parts
- Ask which hardware maker the line uses and where replacement parts come from. Hinges, keeps and gear rods from the major European hardware makers are widely stocked; proprietary hardware is not.
- Ratings that codes accept
- US energy codes need NFRC-certified U-factor and SHGC, or the code's default values. Passive House Institute and European (EN) values are measured differently and are not accepted in their place. In Canada, ask for CSA A440 / NAFS test reports.
- Lead time and where it is made
- Imported lines often take months and need a plan for service parts. Lines built in North America usually ship faster and are easier to service.
Common questions
- Do tilt and turn windows need screens?
- Yes, if you want insect protection. Because the sash opens inward, the screen mounts on the outside of the frame and stays in place while you tilt or turn the sash. Most makers offer fixed or roll-up exterior screens. Ask whether screens are in the quote.
- Tilt and turn vs casement: which is better?
- Both seal on all four sides, so both post good air leakage numbers. A casement swings out, which keeps the room clear but puts the sash in the weather and in the way of walkways. A tilt-turn swings in, ventilates securely in tilt mode and is easy to clean from inside, but needs interior clearance.
- Can a tilt and turn window be an egress window?
- Yes, when the fully turned sash gives the clear opening your code requires. Under the IRC that is 5.7 sq ft (5.0 sq ft at grade), at least 24 in high and 20 in wide, with the sill no more than 44 in above the floor. Nothing inside should block the swing.
- What does tilt-before-turn mean?
- It is the order of the handle positions. On standard hardware, handle down is closed, sideways turns the sash open and up tilts it. Tilt-before-turn hardware swaps the last two, so the first move only tilts the sash, which is safer in children's rooms.
- Where do blinds go on a tilt and turn window?
- Inside-mount blinds in the opening block the inward swing. Use blinds mounted on the sash itself, blinds between the glass where the line offers them, or a treatment mounted above the opening with room for the sash to swing.
- Are tilt and turn windows more expensive?
- Usually more than North American casements of the same size and material, mainly for the multipoint hardware and deeper frames. Compare the whole installed opening, since block-frame installation and sill details also affect cost.
