Casement and awning windows
Casement windows are side-hinged and crank outward. They seal tightly on all four sides, so they usually post the best air leakage and U-factor numbers of any operable style, and they meet egress at smaller sizes than hung windows.
1 lines we track come in casement windows, in 1 frame material: aluminum-clad wood (1).
By frame material
Every casement window line we track
| FrameThe frame material. Aluminum-clad wood has a timber frame with an aluminum skin outside; all-wood shows timber on both faces. | OperationHow the window opens: casement, awning, hung, sliding, tilt-turn or fixed. The symbols show the hinge side or travel direction. | ImpactTested to withstand wind-borne debris (ASTM E1886/E1996). Required in hurricane debris regions unless shutters are used. | GlazingThe number of glass panes in the sealed unit: double, triple or quad. More panes insulate better and weigh more. | InstallHow the unit attaches to the opening: nail fin, flush fin, block frame or replacement insert. | Verified | ||||||||

What to check before you specify casement windows
- Sash size
- Hinges limit how wide and heavy a casement sash can be. Check the maker's maximum sash size and rating for each opening rather than the line maximum.
- Outswing clearance
- An open casement projects outside. Keep it clear of decks, walkways and adjacent sashes, and check that it can open fully near corners.
- Screens and operators
- Screens sit inside, and the sash is opened with a crank or a push handle. Ask which operator the line uses and whether it folds flat for blinds.
- Egress
- A casement opens almost fully, so it meets egress at a smaller size than a hung window. Confirm the clear opening, not the unit size.
Common questions
- Casement vs double-hung: which is more efficient?
- Casements usually are. The sash closes against its seals on all four sides, so rated air leakage is lower than on hung windows, whose sashes slide past each other.
- Casement vs tilt and turn: what's the difference?
- A casement swings out, which keeps the room clear but puts the sash in the weather. A tilt-turn swings in, tilts for secure ventilation and is easy to clean from inside, but needs interior clearance.
- What is an awning window?
- A sash hinged at the top that opens outward from the bottom. It can stay open in light rain, so it is common below picture windows, in bathrooms and high on walls.
- Can a casement window be an egress window?
- Yes, if its clear opening meets the code. Under the IRC that is 5.7 sq ft (5.0 sq ft at grade), at least 24 in high and 20 in wide, with the sill no more than 44 in above the floor.
